The Church of St. Mary the Virgin

Clifton Village

View from the North West

The presence of a church on this site is recorded in The Doomsday Book of 1086 and there are parts of the church that we see today that are believed to date back to around 1150.  Since that early time, various additions and modifications have taken place right up to the 20th century.

Alas, as with most churches these days, it was locked when I visited, so I was unable to explore its interior which is I believe very interesting.

Whilst some members of the Clifton family are to be found in the graveyard, the church also has a Clifton Family vault in which family members were interred
