The
original
castle
was
founded
by
William
the
Conqueror
in
1067
but
very
little
remains
of
this.
The
present
'castle'
owes
its
existence
to
first
Duke
of
Newcastle
who
built
it
as
his
Ducal
Palace.
The
'castle'
is
a
museum
and
amongst
other
exhibits
it
houses
the
Worcestershire
&
Sherwood
Foresters
museum,
and
an
art
gallery
that
along
with
others,
displays
some
very
interesting
old
oil
paintings
of
the
city.
The
castle
site
was
chosen
for
its
dominating
position
and
the
walls
and
ramparts
still
offer
one
of
the
best
vantage
points
from
which
to
view
the
city.
It
is
well
worth
a
visit.
