This is a pit winding gin that was powered by mules or ponies and used to raise and lower people, coal and waste up / down the shafts of early coal mines. Nottingham and Nottinghamshire were once prime coal mining areas with numerous pits close to the city, including Wollaton. Alas, this once great industry has now almost disappeared from the county.
