The NEW Lace Market Square Taken over a hoarding, this is a sneak preview of one of the tree sculptures in the square. It is made of bronze and stainless steel and is again the work of Fiona Heron. I understand that there will be a tree with 'leaves' - I don't know if this is it (Minus it's leaves). I'm sorry Fiona, but I can't say this one does much for me. It would have been far more appropriate to have some nice bronze statues / busts of Sir Richard Arkwright (Who built a horse powered mill nearby before moving to Cromford), John Heathcote (Who invented the bobbin lace machine) and James Hargreaves (Inventor of the Spinning Jenny who built the worlds first cotton mill in Wollaton Street). These men were all prime movers in The Industrial Revolution and Nottingham was at the very heart of it all. Whilst there are streets named after some of them, it always seems odd that we don't celebrate these men and their achievements more in the city. © Ray Teece 23-05-2007 NS00243 |
