Nottingham Waterways

a

Nottingham has two navigable waterways. The River Trent and the Nottingham Canal the later of which used to connect to Langley Mill and then on up to Cromford. The Trent flows through the city but is only navigable up to just below Clifton. The old Nottingham Canal, the first section of which from the Trent into the City was opened in 1793 is now only open to Lenton where it joins the Beeston Canal to re-connect to the Trent above Beeston Weir. This section is dedicated to views, bridges etc. along these two waterways.

The River Trent as it passes through Nottingham is very wide and for the most part has accessible public footpaths following its course on one side or the other or both, making it an ideal place for a walk.  Whist I believe that there is still some commercial traffic up to a landing in Colwick, most boats are now pleasure craft. At certain times, boat rides can be had from a pier at Trent Bridge.

The remaining stretch of the old Nottingham Canal as it works it's way through the City has changed out of all recognition in recent years.  It used to be a pretty depressing journey but it's banks have undergone a renaissance and the trip is now very pleasant with new bars, restaurants and supermarkets on route together with the removal of all the old railway arches that used to cut the canal off from city life.
