St. Mary's School, Duke's Place
(Off Barker Gate)

-

The old part of the school was originally a Baptist chapel and dates from 1799. In 1886 it was converted and extended to become a school by Nottingham architect, Thomas Chambers Hine.  When viewed from Barker gate, the original chapel building looks rather run down, but if one takes a look at the side from Plumptre Place it looks almost 'as new' and appears to have been recently fully restored and upgraded.

The space at the side of the chapel building is the site of an ancient burial ground associated with nearby St Mary's church that was granted to the Parish in 1742.  In the 1830's it was used to accommodate victims of a Cholera epidemic that struck the City.
