Nottingham Buildings

This plaque above the name depicts two armoured knights on horseback. One has lowered his lance to receive a 'favour' from a lady. Its obviously a jousting tournament and I can only assume that it is the depiction of a scene from the lives of Dorothy Vernon & John Manners.

There were a number of fictional books and a movie film based on their romance, but separating fact from fiction in relation to Dorothy Vernon is, according to reports I have read, very difficult as the two have been merged through the mist of time.

Toby's Department Store / Vernon House - Detail

18 Friar Lane

The name Vernon comes from Dorothy Vernon wife of John Manners who in the 16th century lived in a house that once stood on this plot.

This store has a number of bright metal plaques decorating its frontage and a sample of these are shown here.
